Homes on the Horizon
The election isn’t the only thing heating up in the

REAL ESTATE IS NONPARTISAN. We all want it, we all think we deserve
it—and as so many learned in 2008, we can’t all necessarily afford it. After all,
this was the election cycle during which Americans learned the hard way
that a house is a home—not a bank. But there’s still a lot of talk going on.
Senator Hillary Clinton launched her campaign with “Let’s chat.” Might
she be the nominee today if she’d followed it up with “about real estate...”
(and yes, healthcare, war, education, etc.)?
Could a billion dollars in campaign spending be the match that lights a
new real estate firecracker in the capital area?
Should John McCain prevail, less relocating would be necessary if the
approximately 7,000 Bush White House appointees (each and every one is
listed in the Plum Book, by the way) decide to stay put for another four years.
A terrible legacy would result if they bought high and sold low! Some
might decide a little change of scenery, perhaps a move to Annapolis,
would be enough to signify their independence.
Should Barack Obama be the victor, local real estate agents may see an
upturn. The aforementioned Bush staffers would move back to Texas,
California, and Maine, and a new crop would come to the Beltway and environs.
Polish up the Craftsman-style bungalows in the burbs, spiff up the town
lofts, and make bicycle lanes and dog parks for all!
One thing is clear: There are plenty of stately homes currently available
within commuting distance of the White House. For example, Forest Mills,
a Quaker-built brick estate on 69 acres, currently owned by former ABC
News correspondent Bettina Gregory, is on the market for $2.95 million. Or,
for a mere $2.7 million, Butchers Run, a Quaker fieldstone residence that
was once the home of Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall, could be appealing.
Cast your ballot: stone or brick?
