HOME RULE: CRACKING THE CODE
22314, Old Town Alexandria

When Washington, DC, was still a glimmer in L’Enfant’s eye, Alexandria was already rocking. Named after planter John Alexander and frequented by George Washington and Robert E. Lee, the city is well-known for its charms. You have the airport to the north, the great river to the east, and that crazy monolith to the west. The town artfully combines dignified shopping and dining with kitschy, touristy fun. Set your GPS to 22314—we’re going to Old Town.

SHOPPING
Walk on down to river’s edge and pay a visit to Mystique Jewelry (211 The Strand Waterfront, 703-836-1401; mystiquejewelers.com). Design your own bling or select from the collection of designer pieces. Find something sparkling for your home at Decorium (116 King Street, 703- 739-4662; decoriumhome.com), where there are chandeliers galore and more; wander the two mind-boggling floors of dried flowers, furniture, fabrics, and fountains. The shop also offers inhome design services. To find the perfect outfit to wear for that upcoming formal party or fancy dinner, head to American in Paris (1225 King Street, 703-519-8234) and check out the one-ofa- kind styles in to-die-for fabrics.

DIG IN
Situated in a converted warehouse, the 100-seat Restaurant Eve (110 South Pitt Street, 703-706-0450; restauranteve.com) features divine food as art. This establishment gives you a choice of two distinct atmospheres: a smaller bistro and the plush Chef’s Tasting Room. Whichever you choose, rest easy in the knowledge that you’ll have a meal to remember. For a special occasion, reserve a spot at Le Refuge (127 North Washington Street, 703-548-4661; lerefugealexandria.com). The restaurant, open 28 years, is the brainchild of chef Jean-François Chaufour. Fresh produce and comforting, clean flavors characterize the country French cuisine. Don’t miss the frogs’ legs and fresh Dover sole. For something sweet, stop by the Bittersweet Catering and Café (823 King Street, 703-549-1028; bittersweetcatering.com), an Alexandria institution for 25 years; the shop still wows locals with giant cupcakes, sweet potato biscuits, unique sandwich combinations, and cranberry lemonade. In the mood for an old-world Italian experience? Landini Brothers (115 King Street, 703-836- 8404; landinibrothers.com) will satisfy your cravings with the simple and superb. This Tuscan-style restaurant also has a wine list worthy of the most discriminating oenophile.
